The goal is to explore basic phenomena of life and biological variability in micro-organisms, plants and animals at molecular and cellar levels using the latest research methods. We promote basic research and education, and applied research and education at higher levels, where biological functions benefit human well-being. We systemically train our students to carry out research, development and education in various fields of endeavor. We also focus on cultivating a basis for bioethics and research ethics in the application of science. The Graduate School promotes education and research into biological science in the genome era in close collaboration with the Research and Education Center for Genetic Information, the Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics, the School of Information Science, and other laboratories outside the Graduate School.
Graduates who have no experience or specialized education in molecular biology, biochemistry, or cell biology will be able to conduct state-of-the-art research after entering the Graduate School. Though they must have a basic knowledge of biology and have a strong interest and aptitude in the biological sciences.

The goal is to promote highly advanced research in state-of-the-art biological science and biotechnology, based on the 21st Century COE Program. We train researchers to be capable of planning and performing research independently, as well as to play a leading role in the international community. We also train specialists to advanced techniques and to contribute to the society and economy. We promote efficient research and education by creating an effective research collaboration system with affiliated laboratories and groups. The Graduate School holds practical English classes by native instructors to achieve an internationally valid English ability. Students are supported in presenting research at international conferences, and encouraged to attend short-term overseas training.
Those who are interested in applying should have a master's degree in a biological science-related program, or equivalent specialized knowledge and technical experience. They are expected to have a strong interest and aptitude in the field that they are going to work on after entering the Graduate School as well. Applicants should interview with faculty in their courses of interest before the entrance examination to obtain detailed information on the research and education program.
