1. Promotion of the 21st Century COE Program
Our goal is to develop world class conventional research on the phenomena of life at the molecular and cellar levels. We promote the 21st Century COE Program, gExploiting New Frontiers in Bioscienceh, to become an international center for state-of-the-art biological science research. We are revealing dynamic networks of the molecular sources of life in structure and responses to the environment. Two important faces of biological science include life-phenomenology in animals, plants and microorganisms and bioinformatics, including genomic biology, structural biology and in silico biology.
2. Support of studentsf research and life
We have a support system for students to enable them to engage in research without worrying about basic needs. We offer COE funds as well as scholarships from the Japan Scholarship Foundation, plus TA and RA funds for distinguished students in the second semester Ph.D. course. Those students will receive approximately \100,000 per month. Funds for all students in the second semester Ph.D. course are also available to help them attend international conferences and report on their research once each year. For health management, a physician and nurse at the health center, which covers the entire campus, are available to students. A dormitory with single rooms is available on campus, 60% of all on-campus students reside.
3. Abundant research facilities
The Graduate School of Biological Sciences and the Research and Education Center for Genetic Information are housed in 2 7-story research buildings. The buildings contain a lecture room and many seminar rooms on the 1st floor, and 2 departments share another spacious floor in the building. Each department is equipped with a variety of the latest devices. Shared devices, among the most advanced available for biological science research in Japan, are provided in various locations in the Graduate School. We have created a new bioventure laboratory to promote collaboration between industry and academia. This is in addition to an RI laboratory, 3 laboratory animal centers and 3 greenhouses. We provide a personal computer to each graduate student.
4. Active and high-level faculty and staff
Faculty of each department supervise graduate students of the department on research, and all faculty and staff collaborate to provide lecture and practical experience to all students. Professors and associate professors, who are internationally-active researchers, lead energetic research activities. Each department has 2 instructors and numerous young researchers, including post-doctoral fellows from Japan and foreign countries, to ensure a lively research program. The Graduate School of Biological Sciences is one of the top institutes in attracting funds from the Japan Scholarship Foundation, COE program, and Japanese government ministries, showing that our faculty and staff are in high repute both inside and outside of the School.
5. Graduate school education with a comprehensive curriculum
We train students with all backgrounds to become researchers balanced in gmind, technique and bodyh. gMindh in biological science research indicates bioethics and research ethics, which are taught by a visiting professor in liberal arts. gTechniqueh means rapidly learning and mastering progressive experimental techniques. Younger researchers instruct students in this field one-on-one. gBodyh provides the deep understanding of biological science and brightness that can predict future 10 and 50 years. All faculty and staff are close to student through daily discussions in this field , as well as during lectures and seminars. Students are exposed to the latest progressive concepts in biological science through various seminars presented by front-line researchers in Japan and overseas.
